Word of the Year

Word of the Year
January 2, 2013 Sue

Resolution- a resolve or determination:

to make a firm resolution to do something.

Happy New Year!

I bet there’s quite a lot of resolutions flying around today.  A New Year, A New You, a time to start over –  time to quit all of those bad habits, time to start up all of the good healthy habits. We get a fresh start every January 1st.

Well, I just don’t do it.

Now, don’t get me wrong. It’s not that I don’t have bad habits, I do- it’s not that I shouldn’t be doing more good things in this life, I should. But I’m only fooling myself ( after years of trying) to think that  miraculously on Jan 1st I will be able to flip that switch. It hadn’t worked before and probably won’t ever work for me.

A few years ago a read an article from Christine Kane who offered an alternative to the boring New Years Resolution.

It was a Word for the Year.

You take time to focus and review your past year and what you would like to focus on in the upcoming year. No hard fast rules here. No total quitting of one thing or another. Just a word, one simple word that will remind you instantly what you want to focus on for the year. The whole concept rang true for me.

Now, coming up with the word was not as easy as I first thought. But using the worksheet that Christine provided gave insight into the direction I wanted to go. Click on the link above to read more about it.

So, what’s my word for this year-

CREATE!

So, you might think, well you’re an artist, isn’t that a pretty easy word then- aren’t you always creating?

Well, actually I don’t create nearly as often as I want or should. I get tied up with all of the other business of art- marketing, keeping up with my blog and facebook, volunteering at the local art guild, etc, etc, etc. Not to mention my day job, family and friends!! So believe it or not I pretty much have to schedule in time to create.

But this year I want to embody the act of creating as more a part of my daily life.  And this word will remind me to do just that.

So, I started off this January 1, 2013  creating. And as they say whatever you do on this first day of the year you will be doing the rest of the year. I hope this is true!

Today I created several bookmarks with the new beeswax collage technique I have been working on, I’m so excited about this!!           Take a peek and let me know what you think.

Create is an awesome word! I wish I could take more time to create and that’s definitely on the agenda for 2013. I’ve made some nice shifts in the structure of my business that will really support this. Here’s to a creative, glittery 2013!

Hi Sue, I am excited that you chose the word Create, as I just LOVE your work. You were one of the first in the group of flyers who inspired me to keep painting. And now we get to take Flora’s class together too! How awesome is that? The bookmarks are awesome. I had been thinking of doing some encaustics down the road. Is it anything like that? Keep up the beautiful work, create, create, create! You are a star! Huggs

GREAT word and perfectly fitting for all of us. It does seem so much gets in our way of creating and you are so right about needing to push all that busyness away and make time for it. Your bookmarks are very pretty. I have not attempted to add that technique but it’s on my list!

Create is a fabulous word! I agree with you about resolutions. Your bookmarks are lovely. It will be fun to see all that you create this year. My word is “better”; not as in I have to be better, but “how can I make this better”.

Sue- what a great choice in “Better”. Isn’t it a good outlook to see how we can make things around us better? Love it!

I’m still wrastlin’ with my word, or lack of one. There are sooooo many that could apply. Maybe I should pick ‘decisive’, ya think?

‘Create’ is fantastic, Sue. So many levels you can go with that one. Create art, create your life. It’ll be interesting to hear what you have to say about this choice come next December. xo

You wrastler, you!! It’s funny though,I never really thought of you as indecisive. Can’t wait to hear what you choose

Wishing you a very Happy New Year Sue… may all of your dreams come true and especially your word for the year. xo

Sue, I choose a word of the year too! It’s my first year to do this instead of resolutions. I missed the part about what you do on the first day of the year but I would be fine with relaxing and enjoying life…which is what I did on NY day. 🙂 You are so creative and many times I don’t comment when I read or look at your work. I’m always so amazed at how you guys (you artists) can make a picture on the page and put all the colors together and make it speak to others. I’m always so in awe. Happy New Year, Sue!
