Home Beach Home“Home Beach Home” ©Sue Grilli Studio  8×10″ $150

I think I’m always ready for the beach. Especially when I see darling beach houses like this.

Last week I was reading my newest favorite blog ” Southern Hospitality” . It has some terrific articles for decorating and DIY projects. Right up my alley. Rhoda had taken a road trip to the Gulf Coast of Florida and posted some photos of the cutest beach houses.  Check them out on her site. Well, my inspiration factor went through the roof. Rhoda was kind enough to allow me to use her photos for some painting inspiration. It’s homes like this that make me want to run to the studio and capture all those beachy feelings. I can almost smell the salt air and feel the breeze blowing as I add paint to paper. Oh, how I wish I was there.

Even though I wasn’t at this home myself it had such a strong essence for me that when I saw the photo it just jumped off the page.I absolutely loved the shadows falling on the siding. It brought back such fond memories for me of times that I’ve spent at the beach with my family. And I guess family and homes go hand in hand. That is probably why I have such an affinity to painting homes. Can’t you just imagine the wonderful stories this home could tell about the families who have stayed here and enjoyed their vacations. Kids growing up, playing on the beach, having the times of their lives. Smiles all around. Joy!

So, are you planning a trip to the beach this year? Perhaps you’ll see me there- sketchbook in hand!

ps: I would love to see any darling photos you might have of homes from your travels and maybe you’ll find it painted here!

Wow, Sue, you did that with watercolor. It is beautiful, so peaceful and restful. You are skilled with getting the details right & capturing the feeling. Thank you for sharing it! We have snow on the ground again in Minnesota (though it is sunny and melting!), so no persuasion is needed about the great qualities of a beach. 🙂

Janet, thanks for your kind words. The inspiration in the photo was amazing, I just felt the painting flow right out of me. I hope the weather warms up for you there soon, or that a beach trip is in your future!

Oh goodness – what an utterly charming painting Sue! I definitely smell the beautiful sea air and feel the sunshine warming me – I even hear the sea birds calling. I guess there’s no question I’m ready to pack my bags and hunt it out.

Oh, I just love this painting. I could smell the ocean when I looked at it and your post made me think of our earlier conversation about your story 🙂 A lakeside beach is probably as close as I’ll come this year but hoping to spend some time at the ocean in my not-so-distant future.

Michele- it’s all about the memories! Hopefully the painting will bring good thoughts to you even if you can’t get to the ocean.

    Hi Sue,

I feel the same way when I look at houses like this. There is something so familiar about this scene to me as well. I love your watercolor of it. It adds that dreamy feel to the scene and it is perfect!

This is gorgeous! Watercolor is one of my fav mediums (although I can’t do any painting because I’m awful myself LOL) I live on the Gulf Coast in Alabama and we have a see a lot of these on the beach. I love all the pastel colors of the rows of homes. Maybe if you’d like this would be a good excuse to go out there and photograph some if you wanted any?

Hi Tiffany- thanks so much for you kind comments. So glad you get that same vibe of these wonderful beachy homes and I think the watercolor medium just adds to the beauty. And I would so love to see some of your photos from the Gulf Coast, I bet they would be great to paint!

I grew up going to one of the Miami beaches ever Saturday. Unfortunately, our beaches were surrounded by tall hotels. Quaint homes like we’re not familiar to me until I moved to Washington State.

I want to be there right now…sitting in the sun, listening to the waves, sipping on a cold lemonade!

That is so beautiful. I myself and soo not DIY or crafty – but I admire it soo much. Just looking at that photograph brought me to a place of centeredness.
